Children as young as 3 years old will be able to master the pedaling and steering of a tricycle or a two-wheeler with training wheels. Between the ages of 4 to 8 they are ready to shed their training wheels. Their physical coordination and balance have developed. In addition they have become very familiar with stopping and starting and can focus more on balancing.

Avoid purchasing a bike with hand brakes for children under 5 years old. Up until this age kids generally don't have the strength or coordination to accomplish this task. Sometimes kids as old as age 10 have a hard time also.

Size
Get a bicycle experts opinion on the right size for your child. However, this will give you a brief summary of how to shop according to size. Don't make the mistake of measuring the bike by the height of the seat. Go by the wheel size. A child that's 2 to 4 years old should have a wheel size no bigger than 12 inches. A child 4 to 6 years old should have a 14-inch bike, 5 to 8 years old should have a 16-inch bike, 6 to 9 years old should have a 18-inch bike, 7 to 10 years old should have a 20-inch bike and children 9 years and older should have a 24-inch bike.

Types

Pay attention to the types of brakes that are on the bike you're about to choose. There are basically two different types of brakes. One type is Coaster brakes. These activate when you pedal backwards. The other type is Hand brakes, which are activated when squeezing levels attached to the handlebars. Younger children don't have the strength in their hands, nor the coordination, to be able to use the Hand brakes. Therefore, avoid purchasing a bike that has this feature when shopping for children under 6 years old.

Warning

Make sure your child wears a helmet while riding a bike. They should wear one even if it's only in your driveway. The high-risk age of head injuries from bike riding is 10 to 14 years old. So get them used to wearing one now. Enforce it for their safety and go over basic safety guidelines.

Considerations

In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sets guidelines for bike makers to adhere to. Some of the requirements are making sure the front wheel has a safety mechanism so the wheel won't fall off. Making sure the frame is aligned is another important factor. You usually won't find any problem with newer bikes. It's the older ones that may not be up to par.

Rayman Origins is one of the best games we've played this year - there, we've said it. Forget Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City and the latest Modern Warfare, Rayman Origins is as good, if not better. Originally planned as a scaled down online release to show off the new UbiArt graphics engine, the development team came up with so many ideas that they decided to make it a full-blown retail title. Play it for just a few minutes and you'll be glad that they did.

The storyline is a typically inconsequential affair involving Rayman and his chums waking up the "livid" dead with their snoring. Chaos ensues as the dark creatures descend upon the Glade Of Dreams, kidnapping the Electoons and Nymphs in the process.

As with all great platform games, Rayman must embark on a rescue mission, unlocking new worlds and abilities along the way. Clearly we're not dealing with Othello, but the introduction is an insignificant precursor to the wonderful action that follows.

Before we even begin to talk about the gameplay - which is brilliant, if you hadn't already guessed - we've got to mention the visuals. If ever there was a game that could be described as an interactive cartoon, this is it. The sheer level of detail in every world, level and screen is astounding. The backgrounds and foregrounds are positively brimming with activity, with plant life and creatures constantly sprouting, retracting and reacting to your presence.

And while lush green jungles, snowy mountains and flame-filled caverns aren't particularly original backdrops, everything contained within is well and truly unique. Players will navigate treacherous side-scrolling shooter levels on the back of mosquitoes, bounce from bongo to bongo in didgeridoo-laden desert stages and dodge piping hot beans and other multi-eyed monsters around giant pots of chilli. It's wonderfully animated and perfectly scored - with catchy tunes you'll be whistling for weeks.

As for the gameplay, Rayman Origins starts out as a fairly standard, albeit perfectly paced, run and jump platform game. As Rayman (or whichever easily unlockable character you choose to play as) earns extra abilities, the levels become more complex and challenging, with Rayman forced to hover, run off walls and shrink in size to dodge traps, defeat enemies and discover the multitude of secrets and items.

There are roughly 60 levels in total, the majority of which are extremely challenging. Like the latter stages of Super Mario Bros., or even something more recent like Super Meat Boy, Rayman Origins is tough but fair. Players will almost always know exactly where to go and what to do, but actually having the skill to do it is another matter altogether.

To advance in one level, for example, players must repeatedly activate a lift, all the while dodging tentacles. This may sound easy, but looping around the hazard with your wall-run ability, gliding back to the platform and reactivating the lift before it drops, is a lot harder than it sounds. This is just one minor example in a game absolutely bursting with wonderfully designed platform puzzles.

The best levels don't give players a chance to think, instead forcing them forward in a frantic dash to avoid hordes of bats, homing flames, disappearing platforms and whirring buzz saws. It's a real test of skill, speed and dexterity, three components not necessarily missing from today's games, but certainly not always combined in such a devastatingly entertaining way.

If that wasn't enough, Rayman Origins also features four-player co-operative play, which is as much fun as it sounds. Much like LittleBigPlanet and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, players can have fun smacking each other around and trying to pick up the most goodies, but also combine to reach higher platforms and save each other from certain death.

Perhaps the only criticism that we can level at Rayman Origins is that there's no online multiplayer, but with multiple boss battles, side-scrolling shooting sections, speed runs and chase sequences - not to mention secret characters, costumes and stages to unlock - it's a game with enough variety and potential replayability to keep us entertained.

There really aren't enough superlatives to describe what a joy Rayman Origins is to play. Easily on par with genre giants Super Mario Bros. and Sonic The Hedgehog, Rayman Origins is the perfect marriage of addictive gameplay and excellent level design. Not only does it play great, but the fact that Rayman Origins packs one hell of a challenge and boasts some of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous visuals we've ever seen, cements its place as the new king of 2D platformers.

'Mario Kart 7' steering wheel coming to UK

Mario Kart 7's official steering wheel attachment has been confirmed for the UK.
The steering wheel, which is manufactured by Hori, will be available in the UK next month, reports CVG.

Pricing details are yet to be revealed, but the peripheral costs ¥1,280 in Japan - roughly £10.50 in the UK.
The 3DS slots into the centre of the wheel, which utilises the system's gyroscopic controls. Players can also use a regular control scheme with the add-on attached.
Mario Kart 7 will be released on December 2 in Europe and December 4 in North America.

Circle Pad Pro for 3DS to launch with 'Resident Evil Revelations'

The Circle Pad Pro has been given a release date in Europe.

The peripheral, which adds a second analogue stick and additional triggers to the Nintendo 3DS, will launch on January 27.

Resident Evil Revelations, which releases on the same day, will also see a limited edition bundle featuring both the game and the Circle Pad Pro.

The device will provide twin-stick shooter style controls for the survival horror title, as well as more advanced button combinations.

Set between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, Revelations sees Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield investigate bioterrorism threats across Europe.

While it will feature modern over-the-shoulder mechanics, it is designed as a darker, more tense experience, similar to earlier Resident Evil games.

It will also feature a co-operative Raid mode with campaign missions that can be played either locally or online.

It was revealed yesterday that the next 3DS firmware update will be delayed until next month.

'Spider-Man' iOS app for children launched by Disney

Disney has released a Spider-Man app aimed at children for iOS devices.
The e-book application, which includes voice narration from Stan Lee and other interactive features, is suitable for ages 4 to 10.
"This is a whole new type of entertainment," Lee told The New York Times. "They can offer things comic books cannot offer, all those extra features, that's the brilliance of these things. They don't detract from the story; they embellish."

Marvel Comics became a subsidiary of Disney in late 2009 following a multi-million dollar takeover deal. The Spider-Man application marks the release of Disney's first app based on the publisher's catalogue.
Disney is the largest publisher of children's books in the world, releasing 700 million titles a year in 85 countries. It has also launched 30 digital book apps, which have been downloaded more than 40 million titles.
The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story is available to purchase for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch for $6.99 in the US and £4.99 in the UK.

Madfinger proves that the thirdperson cover shooter has a future on iOS – but should you care?

Shadowgun comes perilously close to being a game you might actually want to play. It grinds surprisingly detailed visuals and animation from the Unity engine (albeit at the cost of some obvious limitations in terms of particle effects and enemy numbers) and it does a fairly decent job of convincing you that thirdperson cover shooters can work well controlled through the touchscreen of an iOS device. Sadly, Madfinger’s evident technical flair is almost entirely lacking when it comes to level design, weapon design, and – well, pretty much any kind of design, really.
The controls are the star here, with one half of the screen handling movement while the second tackles aiming, firing, and weapon switching. The speed of your character when turning and walking around suggests a nice heaviness, and entering and leaving cover is simple – although it could be more forgiving when you’re approaching a low wall from an oblique angle. Due to the position of the trigger button, aiming your gun can occasionally lead to you accidentally shooting it as well, but for the most part, Shadowgun is pleasantly unfiddly and allows you to make your way through its firefights with a minimum of input mishap.

Those fights themselves are rather unimaginative, however, with your comically stereotyped gun for hire facing off against endless waves of two- or three-foot soldiers and a selection of exotics, such as scuttling bombs, teleporters, or huge turrets.
There’s an obvious debt to Gears Of War in the enemy design, but Epic’s skill at constantly changing the pace and subtly varying the rules of engagement is all but absent. The weapons, meanwhile, feel distinctly feeble, and the AI is so taken up with navigating cover that there’s very little room for it to surprise you.
Bosses at least add an element of spectacle to proceedings, but Shadowgun settles into a rut within minutes and fails to emerge from it for the length of its generous campaign. This is a smart template for future fun, but the details need work. When it comes to getting this kind of game onto iOS then, Madfinger has, in more ways than one, done all the boring bits. [
